Should You Use Nicotine Gum to Quit Smoking?
Is chewing nicotine gum a good plan when you want to quit smoking? Well, nicotine gum is designed to give you a little bit of nicotine as you chew. You chew and chew and the nicotine is released to you, giving you just enough…it doesn’t stop your addiction to nicotine. It will make you feel better in the short term by satisfying your nicotine cravings. It is quite expensive though but if you’ve been buying cigarettes then maybe the cost isn’t a concern.
It has been said that using nicotine gum is as harmless as using over the counter cold medicine but prolonged use of this gum can cause gum disease. The nicotine gets into your blood stream through the tissues of your mouth. As long as you use it as a stepping stone to getting off nicotine and not a substitute for cigarettes you shouldn’t worry too much about this side effect, but there are more.
Nicotine gum can become addictive, in fact a friend of mine stopped smoking which is great but he just chewed nicotine gum all the time…I mean all the time. He finally stopped buying the gum, realizing that he just gave up one nasty habit for another although chewing gum is socially acceptable as long as you don’t chew like a cow. Also it is expensive. He was spending more on the gum than he ever did on cigarettes. Plus he had to go through the nicotine withdrawal.
So, is using nicotine gum good or bad? It is true that smoking cigarettes is so much worse for you than chewing nicotine gum but it’s still not good for you having nicotine flooding into your blood stream. Either way you still have an addiction to overcome.
